The Prime Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has called on the Muslims and people of Malaysia to strengthen up harmony and break down prejudice for the sake of future generation as a message for Hari Raya. This is of course, an old and obsolete advice. Every year this sentence has been used by the bureaucrats and leaders to address the whole society. 1Malaysia, it may sound attractive, but is it easy to achieve, possible to achieve?

My answer is ”Yes, it is possible to achieve, but it will not be an easy one.”

I believe that out of the whole world, Malaysia is the only country that have several major and minor races and yet, these races are not able to understand each other. First of all, language is the most powerful tool and weapon in controlling the social harmony. Without knowing a language, it is quite impossible for one to fully understand a certain ethnicity. No doubt we have a so-called national language; unnecessary misunderstandings can always be created when one race is using alien language that doesn’t “sound nice” to the other groups. Look at our society. I consider that 90% of the new generations are able to understand and speak Malays, however dose the Malays able to speak and understand Mandarin, and other Chinese-dialects? Does the Chinese able to speak Tamil and other Indian-dialects? As a citizen in West Malaysia, do we understand the culture and background of natives in Sarawak and Sabah? You may think that the multi-language society is uniqueness for the country, at the same time it can be a dreadful hand that tear off this country in a blink of an eye. I always post a challenge: The Chinese is able to speak Malays and Chinese, and the Indians can even speak Tamil, Malays and Chinese, can the Malays do so?

Not only that, Malaysia is considered as “the only one country that practicing racial-based policy”. Last time, Malaysia critiqued South Africa for practicing apathy; we condemned the country, the products, and cut off the diplomatic tie with South Africa. Today, South Africa has been liberalized, but what about us? The Prime Minister is aware of this and has decided to abolish certain policies to attract investors. This is a wise action if the country still has to advance in economy. We have rules and regulations that prevent us from questioning certain policies in the country, in order to protect certain groups? Yet, does it make sense? Or they just want to protect some politicians’ personal well beings? We have independent for so many years, and still certain ethnicity need so-called protections. Does it mean that they never improve themselves? China and India are the rising powers in the world. Imagine that when their investors come to Malaysia that practice racial-discriminated policies, will they put their money on this land?

We argue that Israel is bullying and killing innocent Muslims in Middle East, accusing them for practicing extreme Judaism and Christianity, but do we practice moderate religion too? Building a mosque in anywhere is always “correct and appropriate”, and no one will ever protest regarding this. But when a Hindu temple is destructed out of sudden, when a Hindu temple is constructed in so-called “Muslim-dominant” venue, vigorous objection is demonstrated, and even the pitiful cow has to lose the head for the protest. This is what you known as harmony? Drinking liquor is prohibited in Islam, but do we have to whip a woman just because of this? Are we certain that in this country, there is no other Muslims taking alcohol behind the door, and they do not deserve any whip? We claimed that we are a moderate country, are we?

“Let’s break down the walls of prejudice, hatred and apathy for the sake of our children’s future,” Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said. Indeed we have to break down the “Berlin Wall”, if we are to secure our personal and national future. The Chinese and Indians keep migrate out from this land, which treat them less human by taking away their rights; the highly-educated scholars too keep on seeking for better employment in other continents for their future and living. After years of independent, are we improving and advancing, in every aspect?
